Tornadoes, thunderstorms and hail ripped across central Minnesota this afternoon and evening, killing an elderly couple and causing widespread damage to homes and trees.

The worst damage appears to be in the north-central city of Wadena, where a tornado struck at about 5 p.m. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene with debris strewn across the city, and roads jammed with people looking for loved ones.

The map below shows points of damage, death and destruction that spanned from from East Grand Forks in the northwest corner of the state all the way down to Albert Lea along the Iowa border. An exclamation point (exclamation) indicates a funnel cloud or tornado; a redcross (redcross) indicates a fatality; a teal marker (Teal) indicates a hail storm.
