Living through the RNC

There seems to be much discussion of how downtown businesses are impacted by the convention but little is being said about downtown's residents.

The increased police presence, actions of protesters, and sheer influx of people have created more than a minor inconvenience, it has altered and in many cases stopped the regular course of our lives. For instance last evening, at least 30 police officers in riot gear, 10 bike officers, and mounted police blocked the corner of Kellogg and Wabasha in addition to police intermittently blocking the corner of 4th and Wabasha and other nearby streets. There will additional confrontations no doubt blocking other parts of downtown.

Understanding that security needs to be provided and crowds under control, I and others need to go to work, buy groceries, in short live normal lives without wondering what major disruption will happen next.

Precious metal mining in Minnesota

Where is the evidence that this project is needed? [MPR News: Mine officials tell the state to hurry up with permits] Mine officials tell the state to hurry up with permitsWhere's is the evidence that the jobs will last? Where's the evidence that it will be a better world? This cycle of shattered hope for a glorious future in mining on the ranges just never happens... or the price to be paid is so high one wonders if it is worth the cost. What is it all for?

Isn't time for people in Northeast Minnesota to have something that appreciates in value? Over the long haul the only investment that seems to grow is the land itself.
