Ask MPR Mailbag

November 15, 2006

Is MPR keeping tabs on Norm Coleman's next career move?

Will Norm Coleman run as a Republican or a Democrat in 2008? What party will Norm Coleman be running for, if he runs for re-election? This should be a study for MPR to follow up on.

Jack
St. Paul, MN

Dear Jack, it seems pretty unlikely that Norm Coleman would switch his allegiance back to the Democratic Party at this point. But it's clear that Tuesday's election results will have an impact on how he positions himself for a re-election bid in 2008. Fred Frommer of the AP interviewed Senator Coleman after the election, and the resulting article can be found here:

Democratic majority: an opportunity for Coleman?

The article also mentions some of the Democrats who are contemplating a run against Coleman, including comedian Al Franken and Minneapolis mayor R.T. Ryback.
