5th District

SNAPSHOT
Rebecca Yanisch announced her candidacy for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Martin Sabo. She dropped out of the race 4 or 5 days later. This is her second try for a Washington office. She was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate in 2000. In her campaign announcement, she focused on her early adult years. She had a child at age 19, and at 21, a minimum wage job and a "marriage that wasn't working." Her remarks mirrored the essence of her campaign in 2000. At that time, MPR's Michael Khoo wrote, "Yanisch downplays the gender card, but it's subtly woven throughout her campaign. She married early and divorced early. The story of the candidate giving birth without the benefit of health insurance and, as a single mother, working her way through the University of North Dakota, has proven too potent for the campaign to resist. At nearly every public appearance, Yanisch reminds potential voters she has not just studied their problems, she has lived them."
