5th District: Mike Erlandson

SNAPSHOT
Mike Erlandson, Rep. Martin Sabo's top aide, launched his campaign on March 22, 2006 with an announcement in his hometown of Fridley. In a speech, Erlandson, 41, emphasized his experience in Washington. "I know how to get things done in the arcane jungle of Washington politics and legislation, and that's pretty important for this job," he said, adding, "It's a tough town."

At the DFL endorsing convention in May, Erlandson withdrew his name from consideration after he was heckled by delegates who wanted to know whether he'd honor the endorsement. Erlandson replied by withdrawing his name, saying "see you in September."

In September, Erlandson finished second to Rep. Keith Ellison. Erlandson garnered about 31-percent of the vote, 10-percent less than Ellison.
