Mpls. police: Baby shot by uncleby Tim Nelson, Minnesota Public Radio
MINNEAPOLIS — A two-month old baby was shot in the neck accidentally by his uncle inside a house on Thursday night and was not shot while outside in his father's arms, Minneapolis police said today. Initial interviews indicated the infant was shot outside in the 2400 block of Emerson Avenue North, police said.
But after working through the night, investigators determined "the preliminary information that police were given was not truthful," the department said. The police added:
After re-interviewing the father of the victim, police have now learned that this incident occurred inside the house at 2413 Emerson Avenue North. The baby's uncle, a juvenile male, was also present at this house and was in the possession of a gun. Shortly before 9:00pm, the juvenile male accidentally discharged his gun, striking the baby. The juvenile then fled the scene and investigators are currently working to locate him. Investigators believe that this was an accidental shooting, no other suspects are being sought and the public is not a risk. The investigation continues.
Police say the infant remains in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center. Police plan to talk more about the incident later today.
