Ask MPR Mailbag

August 22, 2006

Can MPR provide music playlists to my phone?

Could you provide a cell phone text message service that replies with music playlist information on demand? Imagine an automated response indicating what music is playing now, the prior two songs, and an estimation of the times these were played.

Often I'd really like to buy the music, but just don't have the time to wait or call to find out the track.

Dear Eric, I liked your e-mail so much, I walked over and read it to the entire Online Services staff. I've never seen a room full of people burst into tears at the same moment before.

Apparently this sort of thing is quite feasible technically; the problem is that we simply don't have the available staff to make it happen at this time. Our technical folks are stretched pretty thin, and already have a long list of good ideas that they don't have time to tackle. So while we'd love to implement a service like the one you're suggesting, I'm afraid it's going to have to wait - at least for a while.
