I built Sleepcycling off of the first eight bars of piano, which remained as the root even after a long process of revision. It's not only about literal dreaming, as the title suggests, but also reflects an exploration process like growing up - "dreaming" after a future, to be cheesy. For me, the piece feels like trying to do something and liking it and trying harder, growing more confident but also more involved and dependent; a lot more is at risk emotionally when you pursue something seriously. The return to hesitance at the end leaves the work open-ended and confirms that confidence/hesitance are constantly in flux. It allows the listener to hope.
