Open Air for Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Sergei Prokofiev believed that Realism had no place on the stage. So he found a perfect match in 18th century playwright Carlo Gozzi. Gozzi concocted dramas that were as entertaining as they were outlandish. One, a tale of a melancholy prince, a vengeful witch and would-be princesses locked up in giant citrus fruits, gave Prokofiev fodder for a notorious opera, The Love of Three Oranges. Though highly anti-oxidant, it was premiered in the West--Chicago, 1921. A suite from The Love of Three Oranges on Open Air.
