Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1-2 years experience required.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Interest in and even passion for news, particularly personal finance, business, and economic news.
  • Must be able to vet information with primary and reliable sources.
  • Good news judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills and an eye for detail.
  • Strong research skills using a variety of reliable online and print resources.
  • Ability to think critically to find specific information from reliable sources.
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of PC-based word processing software.
  • Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adjust to changing priorities and duties.
  • Ability to follow directions in order to accomplish tasks in a timely manner.
  • Enjoy organizing and working with large and varied amounts of information and reference materials.
  • Self-motivated and a self-starter.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience doing journalism research, particularly Lexis/Nexis a plus.
  • Experience with digital audio editing.
  • Exposure to or experience with entrepreneurship and/or personal finance journalism.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in journalism or business.
Job Description

This position will work with Marketplace programs, which is public radio's only national series about business, the global economy, and finance takes a broad view of business, covering any story related to money. Most of the world's stories are. Hosted by Kai Ryssdal. For more information about this program and other Marketplace programs go to: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/features/china2006/ This Production Assistant/Researcher is a part-time, benefited (24 hours per week) position.

This position will be responsible for a variety of editorial and administrative support functions. Will be primary point person for maintaining the three-show editorial planning calendar. Also for researching, vetting information, and fact checking.

  • Conduct library, Internet and primary-source fact-checking and research for stories and/or shows, with particular emphasis on entrepreneurship and personal finance/investor education. Resourcefulness is important in this area of the job.
  • Research, update and manage planning calendar for all three Marketplace shows.
  • Thoroughly fact-check information.
  • Monitor news wires, as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling and booking of interviews and related technical facilities both in house and remotely.
  • Operate studio and field equipment, as needed.
  • Field communications (such as mail, phone calls, e-mails, faxes) in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform administrative and office duties, as needed.

  • Required to walk, sit, and stand; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch; Frequent use of hands for data entry/keystrokes and simple grasping.
  • Moderate noise level, occasional exposure to prevalent weather conditions.
  • Workweeks may be determined by needs of project deadlines.
