Congress cannot and should not vote to increase the borrowing limit for the government unless serious steps are taken to reduce spending, and most important, unless the legislation to raise the debt ceiling includes the full repeal of the president's health care reform law. The farm bill as currently written fails to reform a problematic budget program. It fails to provide farmers with the certainty they need to sign contracts and prepare for next year's growing season. We need a farm bill that provides for a safe, reliable food supply. I am committed to supporting a solid, reform-minded farm bill that reflects what consumers and farmers need.

The president's health care reform law should be repealed. Work to unleash the power of medical innovation and personal choices. I support abolishing the U.S. Department of Education and returning education decision making to the states under the 10th Amendment. This would give local school administrators, teachers and parents the flexibility to determine what teaching strategies are most effective for their students in establishing high competitive standards and accountability in the classroom.

To lower gas prices and reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil, federal regulations that drive up production and processions costs should be cut. Domestic drilling should be increased. Abortion Where do you stand on legalized abortion? ANSWER OPTION
The government has a responsibility to protect life from the moment it begins - at conception. Abortion providers should be required to make the heartbeat of an unborn child visible and audible to its mother; federal funds should never go toward covering the costs of abortions; health care entities that refuse to perform abortions should still receive federal assistance; taxpayer funds should not go to organizations like Planned Parenthood.

Same-sex marriage Should same-sex marriage be legal? ANSWER OPTION
No. I firmly support the Defense of Marriage Act. I believe marriage is a sacred union between one man and one woman, and that the traditional family setting of a husband and wife, along with their children, is the pre-eminent foundation on which a healthy, productive society is built. This legal union has been the cornerstone of our American heritage for more than 200 years.

Issue Question Candidate Position
Immigration What are your views concerning immigration? ANSWER OPTION
While the United States has always been known as a nation of immigrants, it is also a nation founded on the rule of law and our immigration policies must reflect that. The enforcement of our immigrations laws is essential to the economic recovery. Only the spouses and children of legal immigrants should get priority consideration in the immigration process. Illegal immigrants should not collect Social Security benefits. Federal funds should not go to cities that prohibit enforcement of immigration laws.
