Issue Question Candidate Position
Jobs and economy What should the federal government do to stimulate job creation and economic development? ANSWER OPTION
The best thing the federal government can do to stimulate our economy is to allow individuals and small business owners to grow and expand their businesses by lowering taxes, reducing regulation, and promoting a pro-growth economic environment.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
"Small businesses are the backbone of the economy, and the federal government has been too involved for too long with excessive restrictions and red tape. Only when we allow employers to reinvest and hire new employees will we see sound economic development," Cravaack said in response to an MPR News inquiry. Back to top
Federal deficit Where are three specific areas where federal spending should be cut? Are there any specific areas where federal spending should be increased? ANSWER OPTION
Cut duplicative and wasteful programs like the U.S. Institute of Peace and the NSF's Climate Change Education Program; close the loophole that allows illegal immigrants to fraudulently obtain checks from the IRS (this would save $7.6 billion); eliminate the $16 billion slush fund controlled by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. I think the federal government should actually spend the harbor maintenance revenues we receive on dredging and maintaining our harbors and channels. I support spending money on improving our highway and bridge infrastructure.

CANDIDATE'S POSITION
"The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office shows that if no changes are made, the program could be insolvent in as soon as 10 years. This program is too important ignore, and we must act now to save the program," Cravaack said in response to an MPR News inquiry. Back to top
Issue Question Candidate Position
Health Care What types of changes should be made in the health care system? ANSWER OPTION
The president's health care reform law should be repealed. U.S. code should be amended to permit individuals to purchase insurance across state lines and allow small businesses to band to together to (take advantage of economies of scale) purchase health plans. We need to reform our tort laws to minimize frivolous lawsuits which drive up the cost of care. In addition, hospitals should be required to disclose the costs of the services they provide. This will give patients more information in managing their own health care.

Education What changes would you make to federal education policy? ANSWER OPTION
I support the BWCA land exchange bill, which would provide additional funding for Minnesota's public schools and create natural resource jobs. I would like to see more control given to states for how money is spent.
