No charges against Minneapolis police officers in Franklin case
A Hennepin County Grand Jury has decided not to bring criminal charges against Minneapolis police officers involved in the May 10 shooting death of 22-year-old Terrance Franklin.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said grand jurors heard testimony from 19 witnesses, including 11 sworn officers, about what happened in the basement of an uptown Minneapolis home where Franklin was shot and killed.
Police officials have said Franklin fought with officers and grabbed one of their guns when shots were fired, killing Franklin and wounding two officers.
Franklin's father has said his son was shot in the back of the head. The family's attorney, Michael Padden, has said the family will consider asking for a federal investigation and may also file a civil wrongful death lawsuit.
Minneapolis police chief Janee Harteau Thursday night said in a statement that she supported her officers and agreed with the grand jury's finding.
"Terrance Franklin's actions dictated the outcome on May 10th. This was a tragic day for the city of Minneapolis, every officer involved and their families. I am forever grateful that the officers survived and their wounds were not fatal. But make no mistake, those wounds both physical and emotional run deep for every officer who responded."
Harteau also extended her sympathy to Franklin's parents.
