Last October, Kerri Miller welcomed Dr. Abraham Verghese to the Fitzgerald Theater for an episode of Talking Volumes. They discussed his novel, "Cutting for Stone."

Verghese told Kerri that he'd been told "any book that had a doctor and a dog in it was destined to work. And this has a lot of doctors and a fair number of dogs in it as well."

He quoted the writer Dorothy Allison: "Fiction is the great lie that tells the truth about how the world lives." He said, "I think I succeeded in this novel in telling a kind of truth that resonates for readers."

"Evidently I struck a chord with this book, and I'm just enormously delighted," he told Kerri.

The Daily Circuit replays that conversation. To watch video highlights, visit the Talking Volumes page.
