Catholic HS president resigns; cites same-sex relationship

The president of a Catholic high school in Fridley resigned last week because he's gay.

William Hudson had worked at Totino-Grace High School since 2004 and served as president since 2011. He disclosed a "committed same-sex relationship" at a regularly scheduled meeting with board leaders in June, according to board co-president Mark Motzel.

In a statement released by the school Tuesday, Motzel said "leading a Catholic school while living in a committed same-sex relationship is not consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church."

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are sinful. It also opposes same-sex marriage.

Hudson explained his decision to resign in a separate statement. "This is a deeply personal decision comes as a result of a great deal of prayer, discernment and reflection," he said.

"Though heartbreaking and painful, I must say that it is freeing to be open about the most important thing in my life and to live an authentic life. For over 20 years I have placed service of the Catholic Church ahead of my family. I am excited to now be able (to) focus on my 2 children and my partner of 18 years as my first priority."

Board leaders appointed Totino-Grace principal Julie Michels as the school's interim president.
