Cuts mean furloughs for MN Nat'l Guard staff

More than 1,000 full-time members of the Minnesota National Guard will be soon be taking unpaid time off from their jobs.
The furloughs are the result of automatic Department of Defense sequestration budget cuts. The Guard says about 1,100 technical, maintenance, administrative, training and other personnel will be required to take one unpaid day off each week from July 15 through Sept. 30.
About 1,000 other full-time Guard members are exempt from the furlough because they are federal military employees. Despite the furloughs, the Guard says its 14,000 part-time citizen soldiers and airmen will remain ready to respond in the event of a state or federal emergency.
