A bill that would legalize same-sex marriage is expected to come to the floors of both the Minnesota House and Senate this week.

So far only one Republican lawmaker has said that he will vote in favor of that legislation.

The deciding factor in its passage will likely be whether supporters can attract any more Republican support.

Meanwtime, Rep. Tim Kelly of Red Wing has announced his proposal to recognize same-sex civil unions as a way to end the political debate over the divisive social issue.

Brian McClung is a former aide to Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty who supports legalizing same-sex marriage.

Fritz Knaak opposes it. He is a former Republican state senator. He is against legalizing same-sex marriage.

They debated the issue with Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer. Click on the audio link above to hear what they said.
