Klobuchar touts U of M brain research

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar says federally funded research at the University of Minnesota will lead to new treatments for brain disorders.

Klobuchar hosted a roundtable discussion at the university Tuesday morning. Brain researchers there received about $250 million in federal grants last year and Klobuchar predicts that investment will bring big benefits.

"Even a five-year delay in the onset of Alzheimer's would save this country a half a trillion dollars by 2050. That's not even curing it. That's just trying to delay it in terms of treatment," Klobuchar said.

Klobuchar said she held the roundtable to gather arguments she'll use on Capitol Hill when Congress debates funding for brain research.
