Video: Milk truck crash in Lowry Tunnel

The Minnesota State Patrol has released dashcam video from the squad of Sgt. Scott Wahl showing the crash of a milk truck in the Lowry Tunnel on Interstate 94 on Wednesday.

State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske says it was just luck that Wahl happened to be there, driving east bound through the tunnel as the truck approached on the westbound side of Interstate 94. The truck tipped and rolled over the freeway divider into the mouth of the tunnel and oncoming traffic.

"He was just on routine patrol and happened to be going through the tunnel right as the crash occurred," Roeske said. "If you look at it you can still see the truck is sliding on the pavement as he approaches it." The video also shows a river of milk splashing down the freeway and into oncoming cars. "It's quite a sight to see," Roeske said.

Wahl captured the video because the Patrol's new dashcam system has a pre-record feature. Troopers activate the newer versions by turning on their lights, but the devices keep recording continuously, and start saving video for a brief period, about a minute, from before the trooper hit the switch to start his lights. "Now, you capture some of the stuff that happens ahead of time, which is often the reason we're hitting our lights in many cases."

Luckily, there were only minor injuries reported in the crash. "It was just fortunate that traffic was such, that no one had a signficant impact with the truck or it might have been a much more dangerous or deadly situation," Roeske said.
