Brother Ali's new album, called "Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color," will be released Sept. 18. It comes after a difficult time in his life that led to a rejuvenating pilgrimage to Mecca.

Ali has a strong message and it's bolstered on the CD by the inclusion of Dr. Cornel West, a noted civil rights scholar. The CD's cover photo also offers a thought-provoking artistic statement. It's Ali, a Muslim-American, kneeling on an American flag in prayer.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Brother Ali, who said the album reflects his concern about our society's problems and his hope for its future.
