Kerri Miller's book Pick of the Week is David Crystal's "The Story of English in 100 Words."
The Publisher's Weekly review of Crystal's history of the English language and how we use it called the book "a must-read for word lovers." He starts with a word you might not even recognize as English - Hwaet - and takes us right up to "Twitterverse."
