Brooklyn Center voters say 'no' to school levy

Voters in Brooklyn Center have rejected a property tax increase to pay for schools.

The election was held with mail-in ballots and concluded Tuesday. The final tally was 524 votes in favor, and 626 opposed to the measure.

The referendum asked voters to replace an expiring levy with a larger levy, which would have resulted in a property tax hike of about $66 a year for the owner of $125,000 house.

Voters in the north metro suburb have now rejected eight consecutive school referendums in six years.
