Dayton says larger contribution from Vikings needed for stadium
The Minnesota Vikings will eventually have to kick in a half-billion dollars if they want a new stadium, Gov. Mark Dayton said.
Dayton spoke about the proposed Arden Hills stadium at a lunchtime speech to the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce.
The Vikings have already committed $407 million toward the $1.1 billion project, but Dayton thinks the team share will approach $500 million as costs escalate.
Vikings lobbyist Lester Bagley, also at the lunch, stopped short of confirming Dayton's speculation. He said the costs are still being sorted out.
"The state's in for $300 (million) firm. We've heard that from the governor. Ramsey County has been solid at 350," Bagley said. "What's left? Everything else. Who covers everything else? We do."
A legislation proposal to build the stadium, including a financing plan, will be made public within the next 30 days, Bagley said.
