The next governor and Legislature are facing a $6.2 billion projected deficit over the next two- year budget cycle.
The Republicans who will be in the majority are saying they will cut programs instead of raising revenue. Democrat Mark Dayton, who is leading in the race for governor, made raising taxes on the richest Minnesotans a key part of his platform.
It's difficult to reconcile those two approaches -- but some folks who might have some ideas about how to do that are involved in theCitizens League's "Common Cents" project.
The Citizens League has been holding public meetings around the state over the past month, bringing together residents to set budget priorities. MPR's Tom Crann talked with Stacy Becker, who directs the Common Cents project.
