Minneapolis, St. Paul populations up slightly

Minnesota's two largest cities and the state as a whole showed small increases in population, according to census estimates released Tuesday.

The latest estimates are for July 2009. Minneapolis had about 3,400 more inhabitants than in 2008, with a total estimated population of 385,542. St. Paul's population is up about 1,800 at 281,262.

The state of Minnesota's population was estimated at 5,266,214, up only about 35,000 from a year earlier.

The population increase for both cities and the state was less than 1 percent.

In the 2000s, the population of Minneapolis has decreased to about 375,000 before increasing again starting in 2005. It was a similar situation in St. Paul, though its population didn't start rising again until 2007.

Minneapolis is the 48th largest city in the U.S.; St. Paul is ranked 67th.

Only one other Minnesota city appears on the U.S. Census Bureau list of cities over 100,000. Rochester, which had an estimated population of 103,486 in 2009, has seen its population grow throughout the 2000s.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates city and state populations each year. An actual count, which takes place every 10 years, is under way for 2010. It will determine the number of congressional seats each state has.
