Open burning restrictions lifted in most Minn. counties

State officials will lift open burning restrictions for most of central and northwestern Minnesota on Wednesday, as recent wet and snowy weather has reduced the risk of wildfires.

Normal spring burning practices can resume in most counties after the state lifts the restriction.

The state's Department of Natural Resources will continue the ban in far northeastern Minnesota. Cool temperatures and insufficient rainfall have slowed plant growth in the region, officials said.

DNR officials also caution that some municipalities may have stricter open burning restrictions and have urged residents to check with local authorities before lighting fires.

The remaining restrictions include:

- In Carlton, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis counties, burning permits will not be issued unless a state or federal agency grants an exception. The restriction also includes Cass County north of Highway 200. Campfires will be allowed throughout the area, with some exceptions in parts of Cook, Lake and northern St. Louis counties.

- In Cook and Lake counties, and in St. Louis County north of a line running from Silica on the west to Central Lakes and Brimson on the east, officials will continue some restrictions. Campfires will be allowed in designated fire rings associated with a residence, resort or developed public or private campground. Campfires at remote locations will not be allowed. The state will continue its ban on fireworks in these areas.

DNR officials said they hope to ease the remaining restrictions within several weeks.
