The Minneapolis Police Department could lose as many as 47 civilian positions next year if the City Council approves a budget proposal offered by Chief Tim Dolan.
Dolan said the job cuts are needed to meet a budget gap of more than $5 million projected for next year. The plan would eliminate 21 community crime prevention specialists. Those people regularly attend neighborhood meetings and hold crime prevention workshops.
Dolan said the department will have to find other ways to make up for their loss.
"We'll have to try to compensate for it at the precinct level, with beat officers and so forth, and maybe even have people who are identified as contacts for the neighborhoods," Dolan said. " We have lieutenants right now who are sector lieutenants, but maybe even have to expand on that."
Dolan's plan would also eliminate the mounted patrol and the police athletic league.
