Hospital officials say a 14-year-old Minnesota girl has died after being struck by lightning as she played in the rain.
In a statement released through Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare, the family of Taylor Zimmerman said she died Tuesday. They thanked people for their support and said she "was a wonderful girl who will be missed tremendously."
Stillwater police said she wasn't breathing when emergency workers arrived at her house Tuesday afternoon. They restored her pulse en route to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where she later died.
Police said Zimmerman and a friend changed into swimsuits and went outside when a storm blew into the Twin Cities area. Lightning struck a tree in the yard and was transferred to Zimmerman. Her friend was standing by the door.
