Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison announced a $400,000 appropriation for a "green jobs" initiative this week to train workers to conduct energy audits and provide weatherization services.
The Summit Academy Opportunities Industrialization Center in north Minneapolis would receive the funding. The non-profit organization provides education and job training for adults and youth in low-income areas.
"The program trains students in green skills that will allow them to earn a living wage and to be part of building a renewable future for Minneapolis," said Louis King, the president and CEO of Summit Academy, in a statement.
The funds are contained in a draft of the 2010 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill, scheduled for consideration on the House floor next week.
