The federal Department of Transportation awarded the city of Worthington with a $2.8 million grant today to fund upgrades to the city's airport.

The funds will be used to rehabilitate several runways at the Worthington Municipal Airport.

Rep. Tim Walz announced the grant award. "These new projects are great news for Worthington," Walz said. "Regional airports in southern Minnesota are a critical economic development tool and these projects will expand jobs and future economic opportunity in the area."

Southwestern Minnesota's Nobles County reached an unemployment rate of 7 percent in February, but the figure has since declined to 5 percent in May.
