A 5-year-old boy died Thursday morning after he was hit by a commercial garbage truck in his Brooklyn Center neighborhood, authorities said.
The accident happened shortly before 11 a.m. when the boy ran into a street near the intersection of 51st Ave. N and Ewing Ave. N.
Brooklyn Center police arrived and found that the boy had been hit by a commercial garbage truck that appears to have been backing up at the time of the accident, according to Commander Mike Reynolds.
The boy died at the scene and was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office.
The accident is still under investigation. The driver of the truck will likely not be charged because it appears there was no intent, Reynolds said.
"At this point, I don't anticipate any charges, but things could always change," Commander Mike Reynolds said.
Reynolds said the truck driver is cooperating with the investigation and is "devastated."
