The Minnesota Zoo says a female dolphin calf was born dead.
The calf was the offspring of 21-year-old "Allie," an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin that has been at the zoo since 2008.
The zoo said complications during labor are the suspected cause of death. A necropsy - an animal autopsy - will be performed.
The zoo says its marine mammal staff and veterinarians had monitored the health of both the mother and calf during the 12-month pregnancy. All medical checkups and tests showed the calf was viable.
The Minnesota Zoo has three other Atlantic bottlenose dolphins besides Allie.
