St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman says he'll run again for office this year.
In a speech today to reporters, the first-term mayor promised progress on issues such as education and public safety despite a state budget crisis.
Coleman told reporters that he realizes there's no quick fix to solving the state's projected $4.8 billion shortfall over the next two years. But he says state cuts to cities and counties have gone too far.
"Our income has decreased 11 percent in cities across Minnesota, and 14 percent in counties. So we were the solution last time, and I would hope we would look to other solutions this time and realize we are at the level of cuts that will significantly impact our ability to deliver," said Coleman.
Coleman is rumored to be interested in running for governor next year. But he told reporters he remains focused on serving St. Paul, and would not confirm or deny plans for seeking higher office.
His re-election bid has won the support of the full city council and several labor groups in St. Paul.
