What the beep?

Sound and fury?
The electronic beep has been compared to the little boy who cried wolf. It's so prevalent in society that most people simply ignore it.

Americans are bombarded by electronic beeps. Microwaves emit them. So do ATMs and elevators, grocery store scanners and waffle makers.

Are all these high-pitched tones really necessary?
