Minneesota Rep. Tim Walz returned Saturday from a fact-finding trip to the U.S.-Mexico border. He visited the border near El Paso, Texas, to inspect some of the technology and security measures used by the Department of Homeland Security.
Walz, a Democrat from the 1st District, toured border fencing, K-9 training facilities and detention centers. He also spent time with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents.
Walz said the trip was important for understanding the complexity of security and the immigration process.
"To start this thing and make sure you are going to have that security, you can start here on the things we need to do right to make sure that the security is where it needs to be, the borders are protected -- and borders do matter," Walz said.
Walz is calling on Congress to increase funding for more Border Patrol agents, security cameras, technology and K-9 training.
