Forty years of MPR
Forty years ago, a brand new radio station took to the airwaves in Collegeville, Minn. It would go on to create a new kind of radio and produce programming heard all over the world.

Bill Kling: President of Minnesota Public Radio. Kling founded the radio station that would become MPR at St. John's University in 1967.

Tom Keith: Co-host of "The Morning Show" and sound effects man for "A Prairie Home Companion." Keith started out at MPR as a board operator.

Michael Barone: Host of "Pipedreams," which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Tom Kigin: Executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel for Minnesota Public Radio. Kigin started at KSJR when he was a freshman in college. He left for a while and went to law school, but returned in 1977 and has been here ever since.

Bob Potter: Former host of Midday, Morning Edition and Sound Money.

Lois Hanson: Started volunteering at MPR in the early '70s. She was eventually hired on and became station manager in 1983.

Marilyn Heltzer: Started as a volunteer in 1974, and became the station's first membership director. She held a number of different positions over the years, including vice president for programming.

Nicky Carpenter: Served as president of Minnesota Public Radio's Board of Trustees from 1978-1979.

Garrison Keillor: Host of "A Prairie Home Companion." Keillor started at Minnesota Public Radio in 1969 as a classical music announcer.

Dick Daly: Joined MPR in the early '70s as news director and went on to found and run the Duluth station. Daly is now a senior vice president at the public radio and television station in Buffalo, N.Y.
