Next stop for Dean Johnson -- Board of Regents?
(AP) - Outgoing state Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson is among 20 candidates for four open seats on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.
The regent candidates were picked Wednesday by an advisory council created by the Legislature to screen and recommend regent hopefuls to the governor.
Johnson is seeking one of two at-large seats on the 12-member board, which oversees the U of M system.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty has until mid-February to submit his choices to the Legislature.
Johnson, a Willmar Democrat, was ousted from his Senate seat in November when he lost to the Republican challenger. Johnson had served in the state Legislature since 1978, first as a Republican before switching to Democrats in 2000.
Johnson said after his defeat that he's considering a run for the U.S. Senate in 2008.
