Tonight on Radio Heartland on Minnesota Public Radio News, I'll talk with two musicians who are in very different places in their careers.

Heather Masse is exploring the many options open to her as one third of The Wailin' Jennys, the leader of a band called Heather and the Barbarians, and the sole proprietor of Heather Masse, creative force behind the new disc "Bird Song". We'll hear some songs from the disc and talk about growing up in Maine and her enthusiasm for the work she did as a music therapist for patients with Alzheimers.

Spider John Koerner has been a legend for quite a long while - even when he was a young man making music with his friends Dave Ray and Tony Glover he seemed larger than life to musicians discovering new worlds through the recording Blues, Rags & Hollers. These days Spider John continues to interpret timeless American folk songs with his distinctive voice and style.

Heather Masse and Spider John Koerner, tonight on Radio Heartland from 9 to 11 pm.
The program is repeated Sunday at noon and Monday at 6pm online at radioheartland.org and on digital radio in the Twin Cities at 91.1 HD 2.

At work today making up for lost days last week. It will be odd being pretty much alone, that is without you folks, except I see tim is here--good morning tim.

morning clyde,
sorry to hear about the meds. the ama is really still "practicing" medicine. the side effects will get you. hope you come up with a med that works soon. it sounds like well intentions aren't enough to keep the headaches away. sounds like some medicinal canabis may be called for to lessen the magnitude, probl4m would be what if it amplified it?
if you are interested i will ask my homeopathic connections what they have found in the fm arena. i've seen the commercials and it looks like no fun. homeopathy goes after the source rather than the symptoms.
watch the sidewalks down there in mankato. the cities are a skating rink.

Morning Clyde & Tim -- hope the roads are OK where you are. Main city streets here are ok, but side streets stink (had to get my daughter to gymnastics already this morning).

The first run out the backdoor ended in disaster for my dogs, who both spilled and fell down the icy backsteps. They have both been much more circumspect since!

It has never been very bad in town here. All the streets I drive are decent or perfectly fine. Sidewalks are tough. Better than the cold snap we had.
tim--know a bit about homeopathic options which have generally done no better than any other approach. Did pot once in college (who didn't at the U of Chi in the 60's), but it had little effect on me. I am humoring my dr. on this basically. When this drug proves useless (notice my positive attitude), I am going to give up on all but the drugs I know work plus excedrin and ibuorfin.
I get best results from 1)exercise--I ride the equivalent of about 7500 miles a year indoors and outdoors, which is my best method. 2) cognitive behavior adaptations (mind talk and relaxation) plus rhythmic activities, such as the biking. 3) distraction activities such as carving and art.
I think my dr, has a concern to keep my capable of taking care of my wife with her lupus. He also thinks I am in depression, which is why the anti-depressants, but they are proven to reduce chronic pain. But I am not in depression. Everyone with fm has or had depression, which I had in my 40's and which slowly decreased to nil in my early 50's--a class event for men.
Well, was waiting for my other computer to finish a long process. Home to do breakfast for my wife and my Sat housework.
Good day to you two and anyone else who drifts in from the wet.

HI Clyde, just checked in, should you log back on after breakfast.

Best wishes fighting the good fight with the meds and FM.

Started Little Ice Age, then boldly struck out on the big rink to take the son and heir to fencing. Heading home across the rink to get back to safely reading about historic ice.

Feel free to keep recommending books!

Greetings! Wow -- good to see folks chatting on blog on Saturday! We got to our karate demo today -- lots of fun. My 15-yr old son getting ready for Black Belt in March performed several times with weapon forms. He's so good! Roads are mainly wet and messy here; but driveways, sidewalks and parking lots are slippery and icy. Snowing now though.

Clyde, sounds like you're doing the right things on your own to deal with FM. Modern medicine is only 100 - 150 yrs old at best -- so you're right, they're still "practicing." I'm an "alternative medicine" person myself, but FM is a moving target that requires a Naturopathic doctor to guide you -- not an amateur like me. Keep on keepin' on. We all enjoy hearing from you.

Clyde - just something to check into. Sounds like both you and your wife have chronic medical conditions that are debilitating. Are you eligible for a PCA or household help? Your county Social Services/Public Health Nurse can do an assessment to see if you're eligible for help around the house.

Our 12-yr son has autism and we get services through Sherburne County -- but you need that assessment first. Just a thought ...

No. It would be hard for me to qualify for anything when I ride 7500 miles a year. I manage to do things most of the time, and I can pace myself to the disease. It's just that I hurt. I very often start out bike riding and think that I will not be able to and 2-4 miles later I am fine. Amazing what the rhythme of the pedaling does matcvhed to rhythmic breathing and semi-mediation I do as I ride. Also the federal government does not recognize fibromyalgia exists; so lower level governments don't either. There are still a few doctors around who say it's just an hysterical disease. Do you know the word hysterical is based on the Latin for uterus, as in hysterectomy. FM is a woman's disorder by and large (80-90%) and for long dismissed as nutty women or women in menopause.
They won't even qualify my wife for a handicap sticker because she changes so much. She can be in a wheel chair one week and driving the next. Depends on where she is in the Prednisone cycle, and that's just how lupus is. She slowly gets worse of course. She will qualify soon for the sticker I am sure.
There. I am sorry I brought this up and will not talk about it again. Boring and one of the keys to managing it is not to talk about it. Who wants to talk to someone whine all of the time.

Posted by Clyde in Mankato | January 23, 2010 9:35 PM

Clyde,
You don't whine ALL the time so feel free to do so when the need strikes.

clyde, i am impressed that you are willing to talk about it at all. i appreciate it. i am not sure i would be able to discuss it with such candor. it is very interesting to hear from someone who has a tried a bunch of differnt things rather than just the standard doctors office visits. keep up the good humor and the contributions to the blog. i look forward to your stuff. meanwhile i hope you and your wife have as an enjoyable journey through this challange we call life as is possible.
interested in my friends bio feedback self initiated cd? she swears by it and a couple of the comments about meditation sound like thats the direction you are finding relief with. let me know and i'll catch up with you next week.
