Taking the Right Chance

Posted at 5:55 AM on July 15, 2009 by Dale Connelly (20 Comments)

Not every risky and exciting opportunity is worth trying.

For example, I decided to pass on the Free-Climb-The-Capitol-Dome activity on Day 3 of the family Staycation. Sometimes "because it is there" is simply not a good enough justification for wanting to get on top of something.

A much more reasonable and perfectly legal but still pretty chancy deal to get involved in is the opportunity to win some tickets to see Arlo Guthrie at the Fitzgerald Theater this Thursday night.
Enter the drawing.

We'll take names until 1pm this afternoon, so don't delay, and good luck!

Has anyone in this group ever toured the Minnesota State Capitol building?
It's an amazing place, and it's ours!

good morning, All. hope you made it safely thru the storms of last evening. we had some doozies but finally, RAIN!! haven't checked the gauge yet.
we toured the State Capitol in school but i can't remember if it was in 6th grade (1958 - Centennial of statehood) or in senior year but sometime. (obviously it was a very memorable experience) but i do remember the beautiful, golden horses... what do they stand for?
oh gosh, Nick - Sammy's Bar is my earworm lately also! freaky.

Morning Heartlanders!

Barb - wish some of the rain could have made it here. But it's starting to seem as if it will never really rain here in the Twin Cities again. Of course, w/ all the vegies in pots and flowers all over the yard, the water company is at least happy!

I also haven't been to the Capitol in years. But looks like I'm getting more "stay-cation" next month (whether I want it or not), so maybe I'll put that on the agenda.

Have a great day all!

i finally ready yesterday's blog - welcome back sherrilee! i like tenacious better than bullheaded. and BethAnn - that is TRUE LOVE for someone to devil 16 dozen eggs for her wedding. uffda. but i bet it was a fun session with lots of laughs. sounds like a Minnesota sort of thing to do.

I have no memory of going to the capitol as a kid, though I'm sure I did. I toured it last summer, though, with my daughter's preschool class. The preschool tour talks less about government and more about shapes and colors in the architecture and detailing/decoration (or at least the tour we were on was that way). Sure is fun to look at a beautiful building like the capitol through the eyes of a group of 4-year-olds.

State Capitol? I think I got the tour in sixth grade.

Hey Listeners, Charlie Maguire reports that last night's Woody Guthrie tribute show at the Ginkgo was extremely well attended...standing room only, in fact. If you were there, I'm sure it was a good time.

Don't forget to enter the drawing for tickets to Arlo Guthrie at the Fitz tomorrow night!

Rain, sweet rain...even if a roof or two leak. My earworm for the day is the old song about the rain returning after a long dry spell...sung by a boy group...cannot pull a title or artist name out of my brain for naught. Do any of you Trial Ballooners know the song I'm thinking of?

I tried google, but don't know the right key words...Jane Morgan and Merle Haggard come up, but they aren't the right lyrics (well, Jane Morgan's might be...and who is Jane Morgan?)

One tour of a capitol building but not sure if it was in St. Paul or Denver. Though I do have a photo of me sitting in the Chair (Fulbright at the time) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee 'in Washington DC. I was there to march on the Mall against the Viet Nam war in 1969.

Oh dear, the age is showing...Have a super Wednesday y'all!

When it was time for my Grade 6 class to tour the capitol, the school decided to save money and send us instead to Sioux Falls to tour the John Morrell meat packing plant. It was much closer to my home town than St. Paul. As I recall it was about 100 degrees in the shade and we had to walk all over the plant watching the the whole meat packing process from start to finish. It was pretty gross. At the end of the tour we were given complimentary cold bologna to eat. I never have seen the capitol.

Cynthia,
Might your earworm by "Long Dry Spell" by the Everly Brothers??

Posted by Mike Pengra | July 15, 2009 8:51 AM

Ooh Renee - I'm so sorry about your unfortunate field trip. Have you been able to eat meat since?

I have a question. Are earworms considered bad things?
I kind of enjoy them!

Posted by Donna | July 15, 2009 9:12 AM

Earworms are bad when they're a song you hate, or one you've just had enough of. Don't get me started! People around the office here will walk by my desk and plant one just to get my goat (sorry Barb). Like...never mind. I'm not going there.

Donna-yes I can eat meat, but the images and feelings I have when faced with John Morrell products probably aren't what the marketing department had in mind for the company. I also have had Sammy's Bar as an earworm and it's really annoying.

but, Renee and Nick, do you have to breath with the phrases as it runs thru your head? arrrgh! (this might be admitting too much)
and Mike, getting your goat is a fine phrase to use. it would certainly irritate me (to say the least) if someone took my goat(s).
breath in: i went down to Sammy's bar
breath out: blah, blah, blaaaaah-blah, blah- blah, blah. (i don't even know the words! but i think it says "take the last train to Clarksville")
:-)

BUT... isn't every song beautiful in its own way?
like the starry summer night,
or a snow covered winter's day.
And everybody's beautiful in their own way.
Under God's heaven, the world's gonna find the way.

I cannot begin to tell ya'll how much fun that was for me!

Sherilee, I too wish we oould get some rain to stop here in the Cities, got just a smattering last night. Looks like next Tuesday before there's another chance, yikes.

Only time I remember being at this Capitol (I'm from Iowa) was making a showing at the Legislature for some cause in the early '80s.

What a story, Renee! I've never been to a meat packing plant, but does anyone else remember a high school outing (it would have been chemistry class) to the local sewage treatment plant??

I think we went to the capitol when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I liked the building :) When I was in college, I toured two different wastewater treatment plants, and the Minneapolis drinking water treatment plant during an internship. Lots of fun! I loved it. I know a lot of students were complaining about the smell at the wastewater treatment plant, but that's only in the first stage. After that, it doesn't smell as much :)

Mike, I don't think it was an Everly Bros song. The sound in my mind is more like the Four Freshman...and it may have been associated with a movie, or not.
I found it (thank you, google!)
Recorded by the Brothers Four:
Once there were green fields kissed by the sun
Once there were valleys where rivers used to run
Once there were blue skies with white clouds high above
Once they were part of an everlasting love
We were the lovers who strolled through green fields

Green fields are gone now, parched by the sun
Gone from the valleys where rivers used to run
Gone with the cold wind that swept into my heart
Gone with the lovers who let their dreams depart
Where are the green fields that we used to roam

etc....http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/the_brothers_four/greenfields.html

Guess the rain never shows up in this song. Hope it shows up in the TC. Thanks for the prod, Mike.

Oooh, Cynthia, that was one of my favorite songs, eventually learned to (sort of) play it on the guitar. Glad you found it... Isn't it great how you can now find the lyrics to almost anything??

Renee - I sympathize, too. For some unknown reason, I went on a field trip to a turkey processing plant when I was in second or third grade in Ohio. That Palin interview last fall brought it all back to me. Not sure how I have been able to stand eating turkey after that!

Mike, it's fun to see you posting more :-)
