Got Goats?

Posted at 5:05 AM on April 14, 2009 by Dale Connelly (27 Comments)

Good news at last!
Barb of Blackhoof announces the arrival of Dodger's two goatlings, a boy and a girl, yesterday morning.
Barb says the girl (on the right) is likely to carry the name Tammy Waynette.

The boy could be named:

  • Pascuale

  • Lucky

  • Artful

Though Barb's brother in Louisana suggests Brooklyn Dodger names:

  • Pee Wee Reesie Cup

  • Duke Snidergoat

  • Don Goatsdale

  • Wayne Terwilligoat

Who does he look like to you?
Post your vote and we'll count them up!
(Though final name choices rest with the family!)

At last report, mom was having some warm molasses water and grain.
The midwife was having a beer.
Tammy is 7.5 pounds and flexi-named buckling is a whopping 10.5 pounds.
Here they are, as Barb reports, "assuming the position".

And for Goat Product fans who were intrigued last Friday by the thought of a logo for Gjetost, That Guy In The Hat has come through once again, spontaneously generating a visual identity for the cheese with same apparent ease that Dodger displayes when produces offspring. Thanks, TGITH!

Barb -- they're just adorable! I'm thinking Country Boy Eddie for the flexi-named baby.... it was on the Country Boy Eddie Show that Tammy Wynette made her first appearance!

TGinTH -- love the gjetost logo.

Morning Heartlanders, plus two!

Congratulations, Dodger! Nice work.

I am still fond of "Artful" -- goats being what they are, it is quite suitable.

The gjetost logo is excellent!

Good Morning everyone.

Good morning, all!

I rather like Pascuale as a goat name. :D

Greetings Heartlanders! Those baby goats are so adorable! Congratulations Barb and Dodger. My vote is for Lucky or Artful.

That Guy in the Hat - once again, nice work on gjetost logo. Have a great day, everyone!

I'm listening to "all the most popular goat names" song right now... I'm hoping that Dale isn't just pulling our leg. It occurs to me that all the Norwegian songs we just take it on faith that they are singing about what you tell us they are singing about. They could be telling us our mothers wear army boats and not too many of us would know the difference!

Nice song though... even if my mother DOES wear army boots.

just in from the barn - Dodger's a great Mom - gentle and attentive. Tammy Waynette and the boy are doing great - standing and eating - and they wag their tails nonstop.
and TGITH the gjetost label is FAB!
Cynthia in Mahtowa, can you understand the goat names in the song??? possibilities?
thanks, Dale and Mike - we are happy and tired. now Alba on Saturday (we think) but she may have secretly been taking OCs so who knows?
happy day

Good Morning RH,

Nubby and Bubby didn't make the running eh?

Congratulations Barb, and what cuties! I think Artful would be a great name, but so would the others.

Gotta know Barb, what's your beer of choice? Secondly, does it go well with gjetost, or is it better to just skip the health food?
Dale, would the song, Cut The Cake, be apropos for the occasion?

Good Morning Heartlanders!

Congratulations Barb and Dodger. I like the the Artful, for the cute artistic streak of white going down the middle of his face. Thanks for posting the pictures Dale, Barb, please be sure to send more.

Dale,
Great work at growing the audience 2 at a time and improving the dempgraphics with kids.

I don't think that Minnesota Twins should be named after the Brooklyn Dodgers.Artful honors the ancient goat-tradition of pick-pocketing. How about having the Artful Dodger and the cast of "Oliver" welcome the twins to the heartland with a chorus of "Consider Yourself at Home"?

Do me a favor and avoid playing Stand By Your Man Dale. Even for a goat its sad. Congrads to Barb and Dodger. Since it is April 14th, can you possibly play April the 14th by Gillian Welch (part 1)?

Posted by Aaron | April 14, 2009 7:11 AM

Good choice Beth-Ann, but I'm thinking, yes, thinking this early in the morning, that since it's a boy that needs the name, it should be the song "As Long As He Needs Me", from the same show.

Add me to the list of fans for "Artful" - for all the reasons mentioned (though Wayne Terwilligoat is very silly). Thanks for the photos - and TGITH, thanks for the Gjetost logo.

Maybe to boost the "Artful" vote we could hear "The Impressionists Two-Step"? (Since others have already requested songs from "Oliver"...)

Thanks for playing "Consider Yourself" Dale. I'm imagining Artful, and all the other goats singing that song up at Barb's place. Can anyone else picture it?

i like all your ideas - i have to admit i like Artful the best also. Pascuale was especially if he would have been born a day earlier on Easter (means "easter child") and the Lucky was because he was born on the 13th. but Artful honors Dodger's name so nicely. you folks are so fun.
out to milk Dodger (she has extra colostrum - even with twins - so will freeze for next year's emergencies) and make some luxury soap with the rest.
kids and Mom doing well

Awwww how cute….

Let me start by saying; I like my job but I must say Barb, every day I come into work and check the blog I realize I long to be somewhere like the goat barn instead of where I am. It’s so fun reading the clever banter back and forth from all the regular bloggers…and you know who you are. A year ago whoever thought Goats would be such a big part of our daily lives? I put goat cheese on a salad with pears onions & chicken and my Mom, who has never had goat cheese before, said it was the best salad she has ever had!

I also like Artful as the little guys name.

Let the fun continue…….

Good Morning!

Congratulations Barb & Dodger! Back when I was showing dogs, there were always multiple baby name books laying around but the names rarely actually came from them. Sometimes the name was decided in advance only to discover that it just didn't fit the particular dog. Looks to me like the boy has racing stripes so I'd toss Racer into the mix knowing that it won't make the cut. It's all good but I am waiting to hear the beer choice of the midwife. Mine would likely have been Summit Extra Pale Ale.

Yackety Yak is a tune that was part of my childhood. It was the Boots Randolph version though I didn't here the song as much as I heard my dad make comments about it as I discussed wanting to play the saxophone. It always brings warm memories of my dad so it's really great to hear.

Summit EPA, Donna. it's the beer of goat midwives all over the world :-)

Computer crashed again...I do long for a radio version of the show...Barb, that song went so fast, all I got out of it was "Bukkene nisse" Which, the best I can do to translate is "the buck elves"

Dale, there is a Norwegian group Bukkane Bruse which I thinkcan b translated to Billy Goats Gruff...as in 3 Bukkane Bruse. You've played their tunes before, so the cd must be fairly close at hand.

I'm late out to my barn...have a day as productive as Dodger's everyone!

howdy, gang!

aw, cute little goats! (kids, right?)

barb, i'm gonna have to diverge a bit and vote for Oliver or, my favorite, Fagan, from the musical---one of my all-time favorite musicals----btw, dale, have you got Wicked also?

nice goat logo, and i like the tag line of delicious in any language =:-)

i'm with you, kate---tired of the city and the office! shall we start a retirement commune ?!?!??!

Thanks for playing Gillian, I hope I didnt offend any goats in the process.

Congratulations to the mom and the midwife and welcome aboard to the kids!

Given the list, my vote goes for Artful as well. However, I wouldn't be one of those 'creative types' if I didn't at least try to throw some other options out there...

Given mom's name, 'Roger' may not be a bad choice (Roger Dodger).

Relating to Artful but just one more step away would be 'Dickens' (after all, he is a 'little Dickens' right now).

'Buck' (Buck Dodger) isn't bad for a goat.

If the Brooklyn baseball theme is important, the team was once known as the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers. 'Trolley'?

The address of Ebbets Field was 55 Sullivan Place. 'Sullivan' or 'Sully' isn't bad either.

Or, if you'd really like to keep the spirit of the Brooklyn Dodgers alive, there's always 'Bum' ('Dem Bums).

Just some more options...

Congratulations on the safe delivery of those goats, but given their enmeshing with Radio Heartland, couldn't the unnamed male have a related name? If not Jim Ed, then maybe that other computer name, the one that was closely beaten out by "Jasper" in that earlier naming event. As I remember, it too was a nod to the still missed JE. What was that name?

Good taste Barb and Mark. Sierra Nevada Summerfest gets my vote today after 5.

Posted by Donna | April 14, 2009 11:43 AM

Oh fer cute! Nothin' like baby animals in the spring. I have nothing wise to add for names for the little boy kid. I am a Broadway Musical fan so "Artful" sounds delightful to me. But "Dickens" is pretty cute, too. The character of "Fagen" in Oliver is kind of goat like, but perhaps you don't want to call up the energy of a con man for a goat. Thanks for sharing the pictures and the goat stories!

When I lived in Tuscaloosa, AL, way back in the early 1980s, I listened to the Country Boy Eddie Show every morning before going off to campus. I can't rememeber the sponsor of the show, but I recollect that it was some old dude who owned a line of grocery stores in the Birmingham/Tuscaloosa area. His name is on the tip of my tongue, yet age has produce an impenetrable fog. Any help, sherrilee?

Can't wait to come north to see the goats (and Barb and Steve).
