Speaking of staying open to the whimsical opportunities life sometimes offers us, here's something you didn't expect to get this Christmas - a chance to take a three day mid-January trip to New Orleans, courtesy of the program American Routes.
Nick Spitzer is celebrating the tenth anniversary of his fantastic weekly show and has issued an invitation to two MPR listeners to come to The Crescent City for a wild night at the House of Blues on January 16th. The problem is - we don't know who those listeners are. Could it be you? Yup.
Go to RadioHeartland.org to register for this quite sudden chance to take in some New Orleans warmth and hospitality and to see a great show.
And here's another reason to do it - the door for entries is only open from right now to midnight on Monday, December 29th. With so many people distracted by holidays and freezing drizzle, the contest will be over before most people even know about it!
What will you do with your free time in New Orleans? Discuss.
The winners should pick up a copy of Sara Roahen's book "Gumbo Tales: Finding my place at the New Orleans Table" for ideas about all the great foods to try in NOLA. And to learn great stories of the people behind all the good food.
Everyone's so quiet this morning. Are they all sleeping late? Or just not awake enough to compose a post?
I'm here and wide awake. Been to the doc already and had three cups of coffee.
I 'm searching for a recipe for yulekage this morning, as I have some candied cherries left from the holiday baking. Although yesterday I swore I would never want to eat anything sweet again in my life.
Morning, Linda, Dale, and fellow listeners!
i'm here, linda, but can't listen due to low-tech issues here at home-----
so i just put the first thing on my list for today---a day with no work, no child (the foster-son is visiting his mom), no pressures:
shop for HD radios for home and car!
may have to put it on the credit card, which i've been trying not to use lately, but so be it---gotta have Dale in my life :-)
I was up and listening as I picked through the shards of holiday festivities. We don't (yet) have an HD radio so I listen through the corner of my ear as the sound wafts in from the computer in the other room. Mornings used to have several radios tuned to the Morning Show but several computers playing stream doesn't work quite the same since they are out of sync. Then again some of the material works just fine as an internet created round :-)
As I began to write I had to pause and just listen as Mary McCaslin came on with "Old Friends." The LP with that song was my first purchase inspired by the Morning Show 20+ years ago. I had no idea then there would be dozens of LPs and CDs in its wake.
Anyway, here's a song suggestion having to do with the list theme from a day or two ago. I was in the car yesterday listening to WHYS-LP, a community radio station in Eau Claire. It was difficult to discern the song lyrics above the road noise and passengers' conversation but it sounded like a good fit with the list theme. Checking the play list, the song was "Things to Do" by Dylan Hicks. If you've got it, maybe I'll get another crack at the lyrics. Thanks.
Dale,
Thanks for the great mix of world music today-especially during the 7-8 am hour!
I will sit at the Cafe du Monde and drink coffe au lait and have some of those powdered sugar goodies and listen and watch. Can't wait!
Dale, do you have any recordings of Simone Perrin, accordionista supreme?
Oh -beignet! Yumm!
momkat, since you like accordian music, you might also enjoy the German made movie "Schultze Gets the Blues". Has to do with an older German amatuer accordianist who hears some Zydeco music on the radio.
Momkat, I haven't heard of Simone Perrin, accordionista supreme! Sounds interesting, though, especially when accompanied by the cafe au lait and beignets.
What about Playlist Beta Testing for Radio Heartland? Wouldn’t that help Hal figure out what to play?
Dale - would American Routes be a good match for RH? Could it be offered as an 'encore' performance during the week?
I'd bring my tuba along and play with the band.
Dale, my motto seems to be: blurt it out first then check for the facts. Simone Perrin hopes to put out a CD soon, per her webpage. She's local and has done some performing with Kevin Kling as well as other things. I'm sure she'll send you a CD when she has one.
Love your blog, love your program, love your humor.
Please, please let me win!! I LOVE NOLA!! There're so many great things to do there.
I'd check "Offbeat" magazine to see what music is playing in town (besides the winning show at HOB) - especially looking for Tab Benoit, Amanda Shaw, John Mooney, Marva Wright, Marcia Ball, Sonny Landreth, Trombone Shorty, and more...
Also check out the Louisiana Music Factory - see if there's any live music playing there, and do some CD shopping.
Get over to Faulkner House Book Store in Pirate's Alley, browsing for local authors and books autographed by Andrei Codrescu or Tom Robbins.
Eat a (quarter of a) muffuletta at Napoleon House and wish I hadn't stopped drinking so I could have a Pimm's Cup there, too.
Stop at Marie Laveau's House of Voodoo, or the Voodoo Museum, and pick up some gris gris and St. Cecilia candles. She's the patron saint of music.
Visit A Gallery of Fine Photography to see Herman Leonard's jazz photography and other exhibits, and maybe buy a poster or book.
Time to eat again, either oysters at Felix's or Acme, or go to the Gumbo Shop for a 3-course meal.
If there's time, get on the streetcar down St. Charles and go to the Garden District Bookstore, again looking for local authors.
Perhaps get over to the Faubourg Marigny to see what clubs are there. And possibly get over to Algiers, where I've never been.
And if I don't get to Cafe du Monde for my beignets, there's that beignet shop at the airport, coming home... if I have to come home.
