For students in Minneapolis and some other districts, today is the first day of school. For everyone else, the school year is just around the corner. Today's Question: In your family, is the start of the school year a cause for happiness, or dread?

I'm loath to leave Jack's comment as the last word on this question, though it needs no rebuttal other than to call it what it is: bigoted bullshit.

The start of school has been altered radically by Jews. Jews changed the start date of public school in 1994 when school fell on the first day of the Rosh Hoshanna lunar new year.

Walter "holocaust memorial in DC" Mondale's son Ted, introduced a bill to change Minnesota law. Minnesota did not allow school to start before Labor day weekend due to summer vacations. The law was changed to make it option so the less than 2% of Jews in Minnesota could be accommodated.

Jews have changed the face of Minnesota. Instead of Jews adapting to Minnesota, immigrant Jews have changed Minnesota and the entire state of Minnesota to benefit the whims of ancient Jewish lunar calendars.

It is sad to me and cost me money in a canceled vacation when Jews abruptly, secretly, and sneakily changed the public school calendar. The beginning of school reminds me of the power of Jews and how Jews use public law to benefit Jews instead of the best interest of Minnesotans.

As an employee of a local college, the beginning of the school year is always exciting -- the students bring energy and excitement to campus after a quiet few summer months. We love having the students back on campus!

There is not a consensus in our household. The adults celebrate the return of routine, while the children commence whining operations.

This year poses a mixed bag for us. Our 18 yr old is leaving home in a week to attend Macalester College. Athough exciting for him, his father, younger brother and I are having a hard time.

On the other hand, our 13yr old has Asperger's syndrome and school poses more difficulties than blessings for him. So none of us is looking forward to him going back (especially HIM!)

My wife and I are both graduate students at the U, so the start of the school year is really bittersweet because even though we love what we do, the school year means that we get to see quite a bit less of each other.

I showed my kids this:

Then I told them that the commies go to school all year 10 hours a day.
Somehow they are looking forward to going back to our USA school:-)
Education is what our society must have to compete and excel in today’s world.
Kids need to buck it up, get serious and work hard.
We as parents need to put strict controls on the amount of recreational screen time and help our must precious resource succeed.

For our 14 yr old grandson who spends most of his time with us the start of school can't some soon enuf. He is bored to death, needs to reconnect with friends, and begin to focus on school work. In spite of summer trips and recreational reading, I suspect most teens who are to young to work really are anxious to start. This is especially true if they are not involved in summer sports. It will never happen but I would strongly support a four quarter system with short blocks of time off and no long summer vacations.

"School" has non-officially started two weeks ago. Two a day football practice and band practice at night.

By the end of August they are ready to go back to school. Both for the kids AND parents sake.

Happiness. The kids are happiest, healthiest and most engaged while at school.

It still astounds me that in a state that takes education so seriously, summer vacation starts in early June and then often ends before Labor Day.

What's wrong with 8 or 9 weeks off, starting essentailly the end of June and always ending the Tuesday after Labor day?

It's a time of excitement, especially this year. We have one child starting college and the other starting 3rd grade, so we have the best of both worlds!
