Iran has begun loading fuel into its first reactor, but has refused to allow inspectors to verify that its nuclear program is peaceful. Today's Question: What should be the U.S. stance toward Iran?
Lonn, you're reading way more into my comment than was there. I'm no blind defender of Israel. The attrocities inflicted on the Jews down through the centuries until today in no way justify attrocities committed by the state of Israel. I agree it would be wonderful if Israel would open up about their nukes; unfortunately, there is no basis in international law for insisting that they do.
My idea is this about Iran and their nuclear plans. Let them have them. Just need to put it to them in very simple terms. If you want to have this type of power than the US will sell you, transport to you and remove from you what you use. But, if you take any and any kind of nuclear device is detonated then look out. We will take out Tehran. We did use one before. That was war. Japan started it and we just ended it. Not going to get into that debate but think of the lives saved had we not dropped that bomb. I would put a stern warning to Israel as well. If anything happens let us take care of it, unless one of your cities are taken out then do what you feel you need to do.
Well steve the cynic, how about if Iran withdraws from the treaty? Would that satisfy you. I doubt it. You want to hold a different standard for Israel than anybody else no matter what. You're telling us that because Israel didn't sign the treaty then we should be concerned? You're telling us that since Israel neither denies nor confirms they have a nuclear weapons program we shouldn't be concerned? Doesn't it matter to you that Israel sells it's nuclear technology to other counties like it did to South Africa? You will trust Israel to not do us wrong? I don't. Not after the Lavon Affair, the King David Hotel bombings and the USS Liberty. I will never forget these things. Sure, hold Iran accountable but also Israel. They are not to be trusted any more than anyone else.
Dallas, you had me until you started with the 9/11 conspiracy theory stuff.
War could be obsolete tomorrow if it wasn't for the greed that feeds them. In The Financial Times, Robert Shapiro (a former Clinton adviser) said that Obama needed an Oklahoma City or 9/11 attack to make him look strong. If our country doesn't stop worrying about soap opera bs and start demanding from our leaders to stop sending poor people off to kill uther poor people while we bankrupt our own country, then this country will no longer be able to be the exception to the rule as far as internal conflicts. Look at the Tea Party, it's classic divide and conquer. Make the new protesters think that the problem is the old protesters and the same people that made this mess keep on keeping on. I'm just glad that I escaped to the Great North State from GA. 9/11 has so many unanswered questions that everybody is afraid to discuss. Until that lie is exposed there will be a huge hole in the psyche of our country. Our country is responsible for 150,000 deaths of innocent people in Iraq, not including the deaths of people only defending against intruders. We need to stop pretending to be intellectual behind a microphone while totally dismissing reasonable people asking reasonable questions. http://www.ae911truth.org
Exactlly the same as what we'd expect when the U.S.fuels one of our nuclear reactors. As the only country thats actually used a nuclear bomd against others were not in a moral position to pass judgement.
Us policy toward Iran should be:
1) return our citizens who were unlawfully kidnapped outside Iran & now reside in Iranian prisons where they have not formally charged or convicted.
2) cease all nuclear weapons development programs & allow inspectors of all nuclear facilities.
3) promotion of human rights including freedoms of speech & assembly; right to speedy, fair & open trial; conducting open, free & fair elections; equal rights for all regardless of gender, religious affiliation, etc.
We have a certified nut job with nuclear enrichment and a breeder reactor….that has many times threated to destroy Israel and the West. What could possibly go wrong?
Why go through the expense and labor to make a nuke plant when they could be burning oil for electricity…. Just to be green?
The writing is on the wall, if he is allowed to proceed he WILL threaten and most likely use a nuclear weapon to advance Iranian believes.
Our leaders lack the intestinal fortitude to stand up to I’m-a-Nut-Job.
Oh-well sit back, grab some popcorn and hope the nuclear fallout lands in the sea.

Nations ought not be hypocrites. There is no good reason why it's ok for the U.S., etc., to have nuclear weapons, but oh no Iran, you can't.
The U.S. should drop the inflammatory rhetoric but insist that Iran live up to its commitment under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
It also needs to recognize and rectify its double-standard of allowing Israel's nuclear programs to continue unmonitored.
Further, it needs to discontinue providing aid, military or otherwise, to any country believed or known to possess nuclear weapons, including Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea, which are not part of the NPT, and insist that they submit their programs to international inspection.
Last, it needs to live up to the spirit of the NPT and stop its own nuclear testing. The threat of nuclear annihilation will end only when the five permanent members of the UN Security Council end their hypocrisy about the NPT and get rid of their own nuclear stockpiles, not just hold other, weaker countries to this standard!
The premise of the todays question is completely false. Iran is not barring the inspection of the Bushehr reactor or any of its other nuclear activities at all. Where do you get your facts? The question really shows an embarrassing ignorance of the situation. You should be talking about the Lakes of Minnesota instead or something else that you know something about.
Diplomacy? Really?
Kumbaya.............
The difference, Lonn, Israel is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and so doesn't have to allow inspectors. Also, Israel has not, strictly speaking, lied about its nuclear weapons; it has neither confirmed nor denied that it has them. Iran, on the other hand, has denied having a nuclear weapons program while evidently having one.
The US should do the same to Iran as it so far has done to Israel for also having nuclear facilities that have not been inspected.
We should have only one stance on this, and that would be absolutely zero tolerance to Irans behavior. No nuclear program should be allowed, especially to a country whose leader is a known terrorist.
Well first off not to go in with guns blazing.
No need to recreate a national debt like Bush left us.
Nor a public record of being bullies.
We should avoid faking any reports of weapons of mass destruction like what Bush and Chenney had done and lied to the rest of americans.
Once we have actual credible evidence then options of actions should be put before the president. And let the president choose the option that best fits what unfolds.
In other words let the intelligence agencies do their job right and not force a opinion on them. Let Facts stand and not 'hopes' (like Bush had so he could seek revenge for the attack on his father... )
If we can hold off 'forcing' evidence then maybe we can make a move that will not cost us and others. Think twice, act once.
work very cautiously and carefully through diplomacy!
Support Israel when they decide to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities.
Carrot and stick approach seems like it work well.
Before I can respond to this question, we need to determine if this is being supported only by the Muslim extremist or the moderate Muslin's. When this is determined than we can develop a proper response to this action. I would guess the "moderate" Muslims would be willing to negotiate. At least that is what I am being told by a segment of the US population.
Our options are limited. All we can realistically do is make a public fuss and insist on more feckless economic sanctions. If only we hadn't invaded Iraq and overextended our military while removing a regional rival to Iran, we'd have less of a problem and more flexibility in dealing with it.
Firm, but fair.
At a minimum, the US government should acknowledge the students and the resistive uprising that is happening today.
Make it an international news item. I know the national news media is afraid to confront radical Islam. Especially NPR, now that George Soros is calling the shots.
