Valleyfair amusement park could move closer to serving alcoholic beverages under legislation introduced today in the Minnesota Senate.

The bill would allow the city of Shakopee to issue an on-sale intoxicating liquor license to Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., the Ohio-based company that owns and operates Valleyfair.

Sen. Eric Pratt, R-Prior Lake, is the bill's chief author. Pratt said he was collaborating with Rep. Michael Beard, R-Shakopee, and the city to help Valleyfair meet its business plans.

"Currently they're restricted from offering that, and we believe that the city of Shakopee should have the right to issue that liquor license if they deem it appropriate," Pratt said.

Pratt said he had not been in direct contact with Valleyfair officials and did not know what they have planned after obtaining the liquor license.
