Report: Pawlenty to gauge if support there for 2012 run

Get ready for lots of these reports in the next year or so..

Washington Whispers (a U.S. News and World Report blog) says Pawlenty will work the country to see if he can mount a White House bid in 2012:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who has decided against running for a third term in 2010, will spend the next two years traveling the country to see if he can build enough support to run for president in 2012, according to associates. The Republican, who is expected to play up his humble roots and past in a populist bid against President Obama, will decide in 2011 if there is enough of a base on which to build his campaign. Those close to "T-Paw" said that his focus is the presidency, not a vice presidential nomination or an effort to raise his name recognition en route to a bid in 2016. When Pawlenty made his decision to stick to just two terms, it was viewed as his opening move in the 2012 campaign. GOP officials believe that he is likely to face Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, and others in the early primaries and caucuses if he decides to run.

If Pawlenty decides to run for president, he'll need to boost his national fundraising base. MPR reported this morning that he received only ten donations from the critical states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina between 2001 and 2008.

Pawlenty likes to say that there's broad support among the public for his unallotment plans... have there been any polls to show this? I find it hard to believe that people in Minnesota aren't smart enough to realize that he's padding his resume for a presidential run at our expense. Can't anything be done to stop him? It reminds me of the run up to the Iraq war, when those opposing the war were unable to stop Bush. We shouldn't have a government where one person can impact so many lives without being required to go through some checks and balances.
