A CBS poll taken before Palin's speech says most are unsure about Palin.
Here's a potential concern for Palin lovers. A VP candidate is the campaign's top surrogate. She can summon a cable interview or sit down interview at any time. The problem is she hasn't answered any questions yet (except from People magazine) about her experience, trooper gate, ear marks, why she says she stood up against the bridge to nowhere but really backed it... The so-called pitbull with lipstick will have to answer those questions before she can go on the offensive.

Erik Paulsen, Republican candidate in MN's 3rd Congressional District, will address the Republican National Convention tonight around 5:30. He'll speak for about five minutes on his reform and pro-growth agenda.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty will also give a short speech around 7 p.m. about Sen. John McCain's life story.
Pawlenty also told WCCO radio that the podium setup inside the Xcel Energy Center is being reworked into the kind of town-hall setting in which McCain is most comfortable.

You may have heard by now that carpenters spent the night rebuilding the convention stage inside the Xcel Energy Center. Here's what it looks like now:

That ramp in the front is supposed to give it more of a "town hall" feel because McCain is more comfortable in that setting than giving a more traditional speech with a telepromter. Who knows what other surprises the campaign will pull out to try to compete with Barack Obama's Mile High Stadium speech last week?

Prominent GOP pollster Frank Luntz spoke to Minnesota's delegation this morning. He offered advice on how the delegates can help deliver Minnesota for McCain. Among the topics:
-Call it deep sea exploration as opposed to offshore drilling-Call it American oil, American gas, American solar...
-Why John McCain and Sarah Palin shouldn't highlight social issues
-McCain's liabilities
It's an interesting listen as to how issues are framed and spinned for political gain.

The McCain campaign said ten Minnesotans (in addition to the delegates) will be watching John McCain's acceptance speech up close. I'm told they'll be in the front row (right in front of Ohio). on the stage behind McCain.
Among them are Jerry Driscoll, who was a prisoner of war in the Hanoi Hilton with McCain, and Lisa Sisinni, a Clinton supporter who wrote an op-ed saying she'll vote for McCain. The McCain campaign says the other Minnesotans are a police officer, a fire fighter, a paramedic, a gold star mother (a woman who lost a son or daughter in Iraq or Afghanistan), a member of the McCain Hispanic Coalition, a McCain volunteer and Olympic wrestler Jacob Deitchler.

The RNC released some excerpts from John McCain's speech:
On running mate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin:
"I'm very proud to have introduced our next Vice President to the country. But I can't wait until I introduce her to Washington. And let me offer an advance warning to the old, big spending, do nothing, me first, country second Washington crowd: change is coming."
On solving problems in Washington:
"The constant partisan rancor that stops us from solving these problems isn't a cause, it's a symptom. It's what happens when people go to Washington to work for themselves and not you.
Again and again, I've worked with members of both parties to fix problems that need to be fixed. That's how I will govern as President. I will reach out my hand to anyone to help me get this country moving again. I have that record and the scars to prove it. Senator Obama does not."
On love of country:
"I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn't my own man anymore. I was my country's."
