Sorry the Digest is late today. I'm trying to catch up.

We'll start with the latest news. Gov. Pawlenty announced some health care changes this morning. He also repeated his "I won't engage in speculation" when asked about the VP possibility. He wouldn't answer if he was ready to be president, whether he was still committed to serving his full term as governor and whether he expected to be governor in January. He did say, however, that he's working with staff on his priorities for the next legislative session. Can we get a tea leaf reader in here?

There have been plenty of items saying McCain intends to announce his VP pick soon. For example:

CQ says Pawlenty is getting plenty of attention.

The National Review says McCain will name Pawlenty.

The Wall Street Journal says both candidates are narrowing their choices. Pawlenty is mentioned.

Politico details how to roll out a running mate.

Pawlenty will speak before the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council on Wednesday. He's also heading to Iowa on Saturday.

35W bridge collapse anniversary

The Star Tribune says a clue on the 35W bridge may have been missed.

DFLers want a greater number of bridge inspections.

The call comes as a report said the nation's bridges need significant repair.

The Pi Press and the Star Tribune take a look at the changes made at MnDOT in the year since the bridge collapse.

The website for bridge victims is active.

The I-35E bridge was closed for a bit after a chunk of the bridge fell on a vehicle.

2008 Senate Race

Democrat Al Franken releases an energy plan. AP, MPR and the Star Tribune have stories.

Fox 9 says mudslinging is in store for the Senate race.

WCCO reality checks Franken and GOP Sen Norm Coleman's latest gas tax ad.

The L.A. Times say GOP candidates have been attacked for oil industry ties. Coleman is mentioned.

2008 Race for Congress

Stu Rothenberg released his latest House ratings. The 3rd is a toss-up, 1st is DFL favored, and the 6th is Republican favored.

DFL Rep. Tim Walz releases a plan to help the middle class.

A bunch of candidates are headed to Farmfest.

2008 Race for President

AP says John McCain is backing off his no new tax pledge.

A Gallup national poll has Republican John McCain leading Democrat Barack Obama.

The New York Times says lobbyists gave $181,000 to Republican John McCain.

McCain's latest ad also hits Democrat Barack Obama on his overseas trip.

A pro Obama ad targets the youth vote.

McCain says voters should not be concerned about his health.

Forum Communications says the presidential candidates are eyeing the Upper Midwest.

The Star Tribune says the RNC Convention may provide more of a blip, not a bounce, in Minnesota for McCain.

The Washington Post says Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine is near the top of Obama's VP list.

Congress

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has been indicted on corruption charges.

Billions in business payroll taxes remain unpaid to the U.S. GOP Sen. Norm Coleman is mentioned.

AP says low income energy funding is in jeopardy. Coleman and DFL Sen. Amy Klobuchar is mentioned.

The Mental Health parity bill is on the fast track. GOP Rep. Jim Ramstad is mentioned.

DFL Rep. Betty McCollum blogs about her trip to Africa and the nation's security needs.

GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann's office says Bachmann will be on Fox News this afternoon at 3pm to talk about her trip to an offshore oil rig. She debated energy policy yesterday in New Orleans.

Bachmann also wrote an op-ed on energy in the Wall Street Journal.

The housing rescue bill also includes aid for returning veterans. Coleman offered the amendment.

The Senate will hold hearings on the Great Lakes Compact.

A cruise between Duluth and Toronto is slated to continue. DFL Rep. Jim Oberstar is mentioned.

State government

A new law says Minnesota state candidates need to put words behind their tv and radio ads.

New laws add more restrictions for teen drivers.

2010

The Trades Council urged DFL Sen. Tom Bakk to run for governor.

Other

Former MNGOP Chair Bill Cooper will take over at TCF.
