Fred Thompson's campaign announced the members of his Minnesota Steering Committee. Minnesota House Minority Leader Marty Seifert will serve as the honorary chairman and will lead the Thompson campaign in Minnesota. Other members of the committee include Rep. Tom Hackbarth, Margaret Cavanaugh, Mike Barrett and Kurt Daudt.
This announcement spreads out the endorsements for Minnesota's top politicians. Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty is backing Arizona Senator John McCain. GOP Sen. Norm Coleman is backing former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Evie Axhdahl and Brian Sullivan are backing former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
On the Democratic side, former Vice President Walter Mondale and former Senator Mark Dayton are backing New York Senator Hillary Clinton. Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and DFL Congressman Keith Ellison are backing Illinois Senator Barack Obama. DFL Congressman Jim Oberstar and Minnesota House Majority Leader Tony Sertich are backing former North Carolina Senator John Edwards.
I don't think the other members of Minnesota's Congressional delegation have endorsed anyone yet (including DFL Sen. Amy Klobuchar, DFL Rep. Tim Walz, DFL Rep. Betty McCollum, DFL Rep. Collin Peterson, GOP Rep. John Kline, GOP Rep. Jim Ramstad and GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann). If I'm wrong please let me know. Do you know of any other significant endorsements? Do these endorsements carry any weight with the average voter? Discuss...
UPDATE: I'm told Minnesota House Speaker Margaret Kelliher and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman are backing fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton.
"Do these endorsements carry any weight with the average voter? Discuss..."
I suspect not, but cannot be certain. I find it odd the Senator Coleman, who allegedly switched parties because of the Dem/DFL inflexibility on abortion (am I misremembering?) has endorsed the only Republican candidate who's pro-choice.
