MPR's Tim Pugmire went to a Keith Ellison press conference today and filed this:
Fifth District DFL congressional candidate Keith Ellison says he wants Watergate-style hearings into activities of the Bush administration.
Ellison marked this week's 32nd anniversary of President Richard Nixon's resignation to call for the congressional investigation. He accuses the White House of what he calls "imperial excesses" and the expansion of executive authority.
"I think it's important we have to develop the body of evidence. But I think that the indications are there have been impeachable offenses committed. But I think that the most important thing is to begin the investigative process, begin the inquiry into these things."
Ellison, who's a state representative from Minneapolis, introduced a resolution in the Minnesota House earlier this year calling for the impeachment of President Bush. The measure was defeated. A Minnesota Republican Party spokesman says Ellison is a far-left candidate who's out of touch with most Minnesotans.
How did the 5th get here? How can that district jump from Sabo to Ellison overnight? It's no demographic shift. The situation suggests that large portions of the electorate sat this one out, and that the endorsement process was run by the True Belivers.
You go, Keith, take down the whole Bush Machine with your impeachment drama, but don't act surprised in 18 months to find yourself irrelevant on the floor of the House.
Sabo is not standing for reelection. Ellison still has to win a primary battle, plus the general. As a resident of the 5th I do have to admit that I think he's correct in that its time for Congress to quit rolling over for the White House, but at the same time I'm not sure that an election campaign is the right time to make the argument for impeachment.
I think the MSM should investigate Ellison's tenure as a member of a noted FBI hate group, the Nation of Islam, and look into the hate crimes committed and racist and separtists statements made during his membership time.
Yeah, KH is afraid that an actual liberal might get elected if he can't be unfairly paited as a racist.
And bsimon might be right about the election cycle being a bad time to talk impeachment, if winning was what mattered to the candidate - but Keith really seems to care more about doing the right thing than doing the politically expedient thing to do.
The right time to talk about this was in January of 2000, after the goveror was awarded the presidency by the Supreme Court. I am proud of Mr. Ellison for talking about it now.
The other right thing to do is to pay your taxes and fines, but Mr. Ellison fails to do that as well. I think Minnesotans care that their elected officials do not think they are above the law. Mr. Ellison seems very similar to Ms McKinney...always blaming someone else for troubles that they brought on themselves.
