Behind the scenes: Waking up at Morning Edition

Our Member Services team supports new and existing members with many types of questions or concerns. During the member drive, Member Services Representative Jess Horwitz takes you behind the scenes and answers frequently-asked questions.

Jess writes:

The next time you wake up to Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer's bright voice reading the day's news, think about this: Cathy likes the studio warm and dark in the mornings. "Though you would think this would put her to sleep, she calls it her cocoon," writes Associate Producer Sarah Ashworth.

Cathy is also known for consuming multiple cans of Diet Mountain Dew, always sipping them with a straw.

Though the program is on the air 4-9am on weekdays, the staff works throughout the day to cover early morning news and later-breaking stories. Cathy and Morning Edition Producer Eugene Cha arrive by 4 a.m. every day to prep for the show. Senior Producer Jim Bickal comes in around 7 a.m. and then Sarah comes in around 9 a.m. Sarah usually spends the day preparing interviews and content for the following morning. If news breaks later in the day, she's able to assemble stories for Cathy and Eugene to discuss the next morning.
